“I’m Filippo Colombo, but everyone calls me Pippo, in English it’s goofy. I’m a graphic designer and illustrator based in Lugano, Switzerland. I live in an old Fiat dealership built between the ‘40s and the ‘80s, converted by my fellas and me in a non-profit cultural space called 'Spazio Morel'.”
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?
Dirty textures, max three or four colours, irregular and bold lines, weird characters, palms and flames. Those are for sure my favorite things to draw.
WHAT DOES “OFF THE WALL” MEAN TO YOU?
Push, push and push.
WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN INSPIRATIONS?
My main inspirations come from the garage & punk scene, the people and the underground DIY culture. These characteristics allowed me to develop my style and aesthetic from the beginning when I start to draw my first flyers and posters for concerts that I was organising.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST PAIR OF VANS?
I don’t really remember — but I think they were Vans TNT.
WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE REACTIONS TO YOUR WORK?
IF YOU COULD DO A COLLABORATIVE PIECE WITH ANY ARTIST, LIVING OR DEAD, WHO WOULD IT BE?
WHAT ARE SOME FAVORITE WORKS YOU’VE CREATED?
One of my best works is Summer in Hell. I made it following a tutorial by one of my favourite illustrators (Andrew Fairclough) about handmade textures. In the beginning I took it as a fun exercise but as the prioject devloped the project started to excite me more than I expected. So I used that illustration to create new products such as t-shirts and soft enamel pins.
WHAT THINGS DO YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR 2017/2018?
I’ve been developing a project since 2011 with my fellas. Our goal is to organize concerts and an art exhibitions in Lugano Switzerland. We have taken over a old fiat dealership that will be destroyed the next summer, before that happens we are planning to use it as a creatve space and work with the city to give it a second life. I hope that 2018 will be also full of interesting and stimulating projects like this one with Vans.
